Proper Way to Install Sump Pump to Prevent Flooding

Water damage in the basement is one of the common problems that homeowners in Pittsburg experience, especially during heavy rains. A wet basement can lead to structural and foundation problems, create an ideal environment for mold growth, and cost you thousands of dollars in repairs. One of the recommended ways to prevent flooding and water damage in your basement is installing a sump pump into your basement. A sump pump is designed to redirect water from your basement to the nearest storm drain before it becomes a problem.

Sump installation requires a knowledgeable and experienced plumber in Pittsburg. If youre considering installing a sump pump in your basement, let Mr. Rooter Plumbing help.

Here are the steps to follow in sump pump installation:

Step 1: Assemble the tools and equipment you need to get the job done

Youll need the following tools: sump pump, power drill, demolition hammer, sump basin, gravel, stone paver, PVC piping, PVC glue, sealant caulk, and filtration material.

Step 2: Choose the location to install the sump pump

The second step to installing a sump pump is locating where the water collects or where groundwater seeps up into the basement. Next, use a demolition hammer to dig a hole wide and deep enough to accommodate the sump basin.

Step 3: Drill holes into the bottom of the sump basin

Modern sump pumps come with weep holes beneath the sump basin and around the sides to allow excess water to enter. If your sump basin doesnt have these holes, use the power drill to perforate the holes.

Step 4: Wrap a layer of fabric around the basins exterior before setting the sump basin in the hole.

This will prevent silt and sludge from clogging the pump motor.

Step 5: Add about two inches of gravel to the bottom of the hole

After youve placed the sump basin inside the hole, place some gravel at the bottom of the hole to add another layer of filtration. Next, place a paver on top of the gravel to establish a stable platform.

Step 6: Place the sump pump into the hole

Ensure the sump pump is stable inside the hole and then connect the check valve to a PVC pipe to run up the wall and exit the building into the drain. Once youve run the pipe through the hole, seal it with sealant caulk.

Step 7: Fill the hole surrounding the sump basin

To finish your sump pump installation, mix up some cement and fill the hole around the sump basin to ensure it is sealed in place. Finally, give your sump pump a test run by filling the sump basin with water to see if it's in good working order.

As you can see, installing a sump pump is not the kind of job you can do if youre not knowledgeable and experienced. This job should be handled by qualified plumbers. If youre ready to install a sump pump in your basement, call Mr. Rooter Plumbing to help you.
