How to Prevent Bathroom Mold

Mold is everywhere, and contrary to popular belief, it's not all that uncommon to find it in your bathroom. Bathroom mold can spread throughout your house if you don't stay on top of the problem. What Is Bathroom Mold? Bathroom mold may be as small as a speck or so large you can see it without even trying. Sometimes visible mold goes undetected because you can't see it with the naked eye. Once you identify bathroom mold, it is time to determine the source of the problem. This may require the assistance of a plumber. For example, Mr. Rooter Plumbing may determine there is a leak. Once the leak is identified, it needs a plumbing repair to remediate bathroom mold fully.

How Can You Tell The Difference Between Mold and Mildew

Mildew is a type of fungus that grows on wet surfaces. It looks like a powdery film and can be white, gray, or black.

Mold is a living organism (a fungus) that grows on damp surfaces. It can appear as a dark spot or growth on the surface of your bathroom walls, floors, or ceiling. Mold grows best in dark and humid areas. If you see mold, you should clean it immediately because it can cause health problems if left untreated.

What Are The Signs of Mold In Bathrooms

Visible

Look for any discoloration on the floor or walls of your bathroom. Black spots or patches on the wall may look like rust stains from water damage. If you notice any signs of mold in your bathroom, contact an experienced plumber immediately to remove it before it spreads further into your home!

Smell

Mold produces an unpleasant odor similar to musty clothes or wet leaves. Call Mr. Rooter Plumbing immediately if you notice a smell coming from your bathroom! They'll know how to get rid of mold quickly, so it doesn't spread throughout your home!

Water Damage

You may also notice that your walls have become discolored or stained. This can happen when moisture from a leaky pipe or shower gets trapped behind the wallboard and starts to grow mold or mildew on its surface.

Respiratory Issues

Mold can cause respiratory issues like asthma and skin irritation in sensitive individuals. It may also damage wooden furniture and building materials like drywall and carpeting if left untreated for too long.

Preventing Bathroom Mold

Regular Cleaning

The first step in preventing bathroom mold is regular cleaning. You should clean your bathroom at least once per week using bleach and warm water. Remove soap scum from the shower doors and floor tiles with a scrub brush and warm soapy water. If possible, try not to use harsh chemicals on your bathtub as this can damage the finish on the tub or tile grout lines which can cause them to crack open and allow for more moisture penetration into the walls of your house or apartment building.

Dry the Bathroom Out

Bathrooms are naturally humid places, and to prevent mold from forming, you must ensure low humidity levels. You can do this by keeping your bathroom door closed, turning off the fan and heater when you're not using them, and installing a dehumidifier if needed.

Repair Leaks

Leaks from faucets or pipes in your bathroom can cause damage to your walls and floors, but they also create an ideal environment for mold growth. If you notice water pooling near your sink or tub, contact a plumber immediately to take care of it before it becomes an issue.

Ventilation Fans

Ventilation fans are essential for drying out bathrooms after they've been used so that they don't collect moisture over time. These fans should be turned on while bathing and showering so that moisture doesn't build up on surfaces like mirrors and tile grout lines.

Replace Grout

Grout is a porous material that allows water and other liquids to seep through its cracks and crevices, making it susceptible to mold growth if not properly maintained. If you see any mold in your grout lines, replace the grout.

One of our priorities at Mr. Rooter Plumbing is to keep your home safe for all who visit and live there. We will do everything possible to resolve any bathroom mold situation promptly.
