How to Fix Bad Water Pressure

Having low water pressure can be very frustrating for modern families who are working hard to keep up with their busy schedule. Rinsing dishes, giving the kids a bath or taking your morning shower can take forever when the water is barely trickling from the faucets and showerheads. At Mr. Rooter of Pittsburgh, we enjoy helping our local Pennsylvania home and business owners find ways to improve their plumbing system. If youre tired dealing with the hassles of low water pressure, here are some ways you might be able to fix your problem.

Common Reasons for Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure can occur for a wide range of reasons. So, the first step is to determine what the cause is for your particular situation. In many cases, the problem is simply an open valve. Sometimes city employees have done repairs or work and didnt make sure the water meter valve was fully open before leaving the site. At other times, the main house shutoff valve has been partially closed. Another common cause of poor pressure include a failing pressure regulator, corroding galvanized steel pipes or water leaks.

Ways to Increase Water Pressure

First, check both the water meter valve and the main house shutoff valve. The water meter valve should be fully open, which means the metal tab should be parallel with the pipe. If it is at an angle, then it isnt properly opened. Turning the tab usually handled by the utility company or city. It requires a special wrench, so youll need to notify the appropriate institution to ensure it is remedied. The main house shutoff valve should also be fully opened as well. Check to make sure the handle is turned counterclockwise. Ball valves should have a lever handle which is parallel to the pipe. If it isnt fully open, youll need to adjust it accordingly.

When to Call a Plumber

If youve checked both valves and determined that isnt the reason for your low pressure, then its probably time to call a certified plumber. You may have a leak, or the pressure regulator may be damaged. In both of these situations, the plumber will be able to conduct a thorough inspection to properly diagnose the exact cause of the issue. If you have a leak, they will have the tools and training necessary to repair it. If you need a pressure regulator, they can repair it or install a new one.
