8 Signs Your Hot Water Heater Is Failing

Your water heater is probably one of the most important appliances in your home. It keeps your family from having to go without the luxury of hot water, and it provides helpful services like dishwasher, laundry, and bathroom sink hot water to make your household chores go more easily. But problems can occur with even the best of appliances (including your water heater). Mr. Rooter Plumbing has put together this list of signs your water heater may fail. If you experience any of these, call us for water heater repair, and we will send out a dependable plumber to resolve your situation quickly.

Lukewarm or Cold Water

If you find that your water temperature is lukewarm or cold, it could be a sign that your hot water heater is failing. A faulty thermostat or pilot light can cause this issue. If you have a gas-powered hot water heater, you may need to replace the pilot light.

Hot Water Not Lasting Long

If you are using your hot water faster than normal, it may be time to replace your old hot water heater. It could also mean sediment build-up in the tank, which needs to be removed from time to time. This can be easily done with a mild acid solution and a scrub brush.

No Hot Water

If you are not receiving any hot water from your taps, then this could mean an issue with the pressure relief valve (PRV). The PRV helps keep pressure within reasonable limits and protects against excessive pressure buildup in the tank. If this valve is faulty, then it will need to be replaced by a professional plumber.

Noise

One of the first signs that your hot water heater is failing is noise. There are several different kinds of noises that you could hear coming from your hot water heater, depending on what’s going on inside. For example, if there is a leak in your tank, you might hear a gurgling sound. If debris or sediment is building up inside your tank, this could also cause noise as it moves around inside the tank. Another common noise comes from pressure relief valves that release when there is too much pressure built up inside the tank.

Water Leaking From The Tank

A sign that your hot water heater is failing is leaking from the tank. This could be due to a tank's crack or a faulty valve or gasket. If you see water coming out of your hot drain valve when you open it, this indicates an issue with your hot water heater.

Age of the Hot Water Heater

Hot water heater lifespan varies based on the size of the tank, type, and brand. The average lifespan of a water heater is eight to 12 years. If your hot water heater is over ten years old, it may be time for a replacement.

Discolored Water

If your hot water has turned brown or yellow, this can be caused by sediment buildup within the tank or from bacteria forming in the tank over time. You should have this checked out immediately because discolored water can cause health issues if not treated properly.

Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure can be caused by several things, but it's always worth checking your water heater first. Low pressure is often caused by sediment buildup in the tank, which restricts water flow. The easiest way to check if that's the case is to remove the lid on your hot water heater and look inside. If you see any rust or sediment, then it's time to replace your hot water heater.

Time To Replace Your Hot Water Heater

The first step in replacing a water heater is to check whether it is worth repairing or if it is time to buy a new model. After discussing the matter with Mr. Rooter Plumbing, you can decide whether to buy a new unit, opt for a water heater repair, or replace the old one with an energy-efficient one. Our plumbing service can accommodate any need.
